The
Balkans is a land of such great diversity and textures
that one gets the blown up by the colors, cultures,
hospitality, food and landscape. We trace the scene
of medieval Europe with nationalities originating from
Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia,
Bosnia, Herzegovina and Slovenia. Not to forget that
all these nationalities also had considerable influence
from the long reign of the Ottoman Turks. Like many
things bottled up, once released, they burst forth
with passion and gusto rarely seen. This then is the
Balkans. It is this churning energy and passion that
will never be forgotten. This is a journey into medieval
Europe at its best, relived.

A cultural tour of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia and Iran
The
Caucasus region sits between the Black Sea on the West and the
Caspian Sea on the East, and comprises the newly independent
states of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. Since 2004, these
three countries have been included in the EU’s Neighborhood
Policy .
The Caucasus Region consists of two highly dependent net energy importers surrounded
by some of the world’s energy giants (i.e. Russia, Iran, and to a smaller
but growing extent, Azerbaijan). Energy priorities of the Caucasus countries,
therefore, are two-fold: to diversify their energy supplies; and to cash in on
transit revenues as their neighbors develop export facilities which traverse
their territory.
The tempestuous history and diverse geography of Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan are intertwined. The snow-clad Caucasus and Black Sea once formed a trade route with ancient Greece. Later on, the Arabs, Ottoman Turks and Mongols ravished these little known lands. Our journeys reveal the abiding beauty and hospitality of the Caucasus.
Heading east, we cross into Azerbaijan. We journey along an ancient caravan route, which for centuries has connected Baku on the Caspian Sea with Tbilisi and the West. Pausing at Sheki, once famous for its silk-weaving and embroidery, we visit the exquisite Khan's Palace and enjoy a walk into the Caucasus foothills. Our tour ends at Baku, with ample time to wander the backstreets and bazaars of the Old Town, a treasure trove of shops and street cafes.

A
cultural tour of Russia, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland,
Czech Republic & Austria
For
many years, Russia was one of the hardest countries to visit.
Today Russia is far more accessible; Moscow and St Petersburg
are mutually complementary. Moscow, the capital, is hugely
enthralling. Moscow's central core reflects Russia's long
and fascinating history at the heart of a vast empire, whether
in the relics of the Communist years, the Kremlin with its
palaces and churches of the tsars or wooden buildings still
tucked away in backstreets.
St Petersburg has been dubbed the Venice of the North; it is Europe at
its most gracious, an attempt by the eighteenth-century tsar Peter the
Great to re-create the best of Western European elegance in what was
then a far-flung outpost. Sculpted by islands and the sinuous Neva River,
the city is a geometric vista of orderly elegance, with astounding architecture.
This beautiful creation managed to escape the architectural incursions
of Stalinism and its grandiose relics of tsarist days are virtually intact
for you to enjoy.
A journey on the Trans Siberian Railway is one of the best ways to see
this massive country. The route passes through endless forests of birch
and pine, log-cabin settlements and vast steppes until you reach multicultural
Irkutsk, the most appealing city you'll pass along the line, with its
quaint wooden houses. You'll discover Siberia's UNESCO World Heritage
site of Lake Baikal - a body of water as big as Belgium and home to the
world's only freshwater seal. Those who get into the rhythm of the stops
and starts, and the passing parade of trees and far-flung towns, will
find it an experience never to be forgotten.

Turkey
is a country with a multiple identity, poised between East and
West, where mosques coexist with churches, and remnants of the
Roman Empire crumble alongside ancient Hittite and Neolithic
sites.
Istanbul, the country's cultural and commercial centre, straddles the
Bosphorus straits and the Marmara coast. The city is a mix of old and
new and also visibly the old imperial capital, and would take months
of exploration to truly do it justice.
On the Sea of Marmara are the two earlier Ottoman capitals, Bursa and
Edirne, and just beyond, the World War I battlefields of the Dardanelles.
On the Aegean Coast small country towns are swathed in olive groves,
while the area is full of ancient sites like Assos, Bergama and Ephesus,
which have been a magnet for travellers since antiquity. The Aegean coast
is Turkey at its most developed, with resorts like Cesme, Bodrum and
Marmaris.
On the interior of the Anatolian Peninsula you can explore the spectacular
attractions of Cappadocia, with its famous rock churches, subterranean
cities and landscape studded with "fairy chimneys", as well as the Selcuk
architecture and dervish associations of Konya.
Turkey is an immensely rewarding place to travel, not least because of
the people, whose reputation for friendliness and hospitality is richly
deserved.destinations in the world and the Syrian people are very friendly
and peaceful.
