OVERLAND JAKARTA TO BALI
A cultural tour of Indonesia

Out of some 13670 Islands that form Indonesia, Java is undoubtedly the richest and lushest. It has a wide variety of attractions including scenic landscape dotted with villages housing people from different ethnic groups and cultures. Add to that are towering volcanoes, dense forests, manicured rice paddles and teeming towns making this 13 days Overland Indonesia a journey into the diversity that just one island of Indonesia offers.

Day 01 (MON) Arrive at Jakarta Airport.
Upon arrival at Jakarata we are warmly and traditionally welcomed and then transferred to our hotel.
Overnight: Harris Tebet (S)/ Le Meredien (D), Jakarta (1 night)

Day 02 (TUE) Jakarta - Bogor - Bandung
We start our exciting overland journey with a tour of the capital city of Indonesia to include the National Museum and the old Harbour Sunda Kelapa before proceeding to Bogor for a visit to the well known Botanical Gardens. Indonesia is known for it’s wide variety of flora and fauna. We then continue to the historical city of Bandung visiting Cipanas on the way.

Day 03 (WED) Bandung
Scenic drive through Lembang hills to the crater of Mount Tangkuban Perahu and to Sariater hot springs. Afternoon is free to loiter and enjoy the bazaars of Banding or join an optional tour to Padasuka village to listen to the melodious sounds of Angklung music using bamboo instruments. (B)

Day 04 (THU) Bandung - Garut - Tasikmalaya - Baturraden
A scenic drive to Cangkuang Lake, a small lake in the vicinity of Garut 70kms south of Bandung where we visit the Cangkuang temple, the first temple ever found in West Java. Located on an island in the middle of the lake. We will be using the traditional bamboo rafts to get to the island. Continue to Tasikmalaya and visit the local handicraft market before crossing into Central Java. Our journey via Baturraden accords us with an excellent view of teakwood and rubber plantations with a good insight into the village life.

Day 05 (FRI) Baturaden - Dieng Plateau - Jogjakarta
Another interesting say as we drive to Wonosobo from where we take an excursion to Dieng Plateau (2200m above sea level) visiting some of Java’s oldest temples standing in open field. Our next destination is Jogjakarta.

Day 06 (SAT) Jogjakarta
We start with a visit to the famous and majestic Borobudur Temple - one the greatest ancient architectural monuments. Built between AD 750 and 850 using forced labor from the surrounding countryside, Borobudur predates Angkor Wat in Cambodia by three centuries. Though a Buddhist creation, it incorporates Persian, Babylonian and Greek influences. We also visit the nearby villages where the art of stone masonry is still being done in much the same manner as the peasants who built this astonishing monument. Nearby are the temples of Pawon and Mendut. Optional tours of the Jogjakrta city and the Prambanan Temple as well as an evening dinner at Purawisata using the local transportation “Becak” (traditional tricycles) is available. (B)

Day 07 (SUN) Jogjakarta – Malang
Another day of rural Indonesia as we drive to Malang via Solo. Enroute we visit the Mangkunegaraan Palace in Surakarta. The Mangkunegaran Palace is another superb repository of classical Javanese art and culture. The royal estate contains numerous priceless treasures, mostly from the Majapahit (1293 - 1478) and Mataram (1586 - 1755) empire eras: an exquisite collection of classical dance masks, wayang orang (dance drama) costumes, leather and wooden wayang puppets, religious icons, jewelry, and uncountable other antiques and heirlooms.

Day 08 (MON) Malang – Bromo
Malang is known as an old colonial retirement town with some colonial buildings, refreshingly green parks and streets. Morning we are free to leisurely stroll along the lanes of the old town. Afternoon we head for Sukapura village at the slope of Mt. Bromo.
Overnight: Grand Cottage, Bromo (1 night) (B)

Day 09 (TUE) Bromo – Kalibaru
Early Morning departure as we take the Bromo Excursion and drive to the village of Ngadisari and continue our journey from the rim of the old crater down into the caldera crossing the sand-sea to the smoking crater of Bromo. Here we have a wonderful opportunity to watch the spectacular sunrise. We then take the drive to Kalibaru via Probolinggo, Jember and Jatiroto. Afternoon we take a walking tour of the local villages to see how coffee and cocoa is grown and harvested.

Day 10 (WED) Kalibaru – Bali
Our overland journey comes to an end as we drive to Ketapang harbor and using the ferry cross the Straits of Bali and are transferred to our beach resort in Denpasar. The stay in Bali, Denpasar is an extension and can be reduced or increased if you so desire.
Overnight: Ramada Resort(S) / Grand Mirage (D) (3 nights) (B)

Day 11 & 12 (THU & FRI) Bali
Relax at this world famous beach where there are lots of local cultural activities to enjoy and participate. (B)

Day 13 (SAT) Bali – departure
After a wonderful overland journey of Java and a relaxing time at the beach in Denpasar, we are transferred to the airport for our departure flight. (B)
