BOTSWANA
MOBILE SAFARI
A cultural tour of South Africa,
Botswana & Zambia
Botswana is one of the few remaining destinations
in Africa that still provides a good sense of the adventure
of an authentic African safari. Its expansive game
parks and preserves, while offering wildlife as diverse
and abundant as that found anywhere else, are still
largely undeveloped and untamed. The Botswana mobile
safari gives a good insight into the gem of Africa.
Day 01: (THU) Arrive Johannesburg (South Africa)
Arrival at the OT – Oliver Tambo International
Airport – South Africa’s busiest airport.
Upon arrival we are transferred to our hotel near the
airport.
Overnight: Airport Game Lodge (1 night)
Day 02: (FRI) Johannesburg to Tuli Block (Botswana)
An early morning departure from the Airport Game Lodge
takes us via Pretoria, Potgietersrus and through the
Limpopo Province into Botswana via the Zanzibar border
post. We set up camp at Limpopo River Lodge, set in the
area known as the Tuli Block. This thin strip of land
in the south-east of Botswana, borders Zimbabwe to the
north and South Africa to the south. The land in the
extreme east is where the game reserves have been established
with huge herds of elephants and hundreds of colorful
birds. We head off for a game drive either in the evening
of day 1 or the next morning, depending on the time of
arrival. We will enjoy our evening meal prepared by our
guide around the campfire before spending our first night
in the African wilderness.
Overnight: Tuli Block (1 night) (B, L, D)
Day 03: (SAT) Tuli Block to Khama Rhino Sanctuary
An exciting day ahead as we drive to the Khama Rhino
Sanctuary. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary Trust is
a community based wildlife project, established
in 1992 to assist
in saving the vanishing rhino, restore an area
formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous
natural state
and provide economic benefits to the local Botswana
community through tourism and the sustainable
use of natural resources.
Overnight: Khama Rhino Sanctuary (1 night) (B, L, D)
Day 04: (SUN) Khama Rhino Sanctuary / Kubu Island
We head to Kubu Island visiting Magkadigkadi Pans on
the way. If conditions allow we take a drive onto
the Pans. After appreciating the wide open, uninhabited
spaces under the endless canopy of blue sky, we
step
off for our final stop of the day, Kubu Island
Camp. Rest of the afternoon we spend with a hike in
the area
and relaxing at the camp.
Overnight: Kubu Island (1 night) (B, L, D)
Day 05: (MON) Maun and the Khwai River
An interesting drive gets us to Maun and onto a private
concession in the Khwai area. Once we’ve set
up camp – we go on a night game drive in the
concession. This area lies between Moremi and Chobe
and we’ll have the opportunity to spot
a variety of nocturnal animals.
Overnight: Mankwe (2 nights) (B, L, D)
Day 06: (TUE) Kwai River
Full day bush and game drive. Departing after breakfast,
we take our 4x4 and drive through the wilderness area
of the Khwai region spotting a variety of game that
frequents this region that borders Moremi and Chobe.
Picnic-lunch will be in the wilderness area. With some
luck we see the Big Five. (B, L, D)
Day 07: (WED) Moremi Game Reserve
After exploring the Khwai area, we head for world famous
Moremi game reserve known as the most beautiful and
varied reserves in Africa with large concentration
of wildlife. Day spent in the unspoiled nature of Moremi
Game Reserve. Our vehicle will be changed to especially
equipped and designed one to take us through the rough
terrain that we will face in the next six days.
Overnight: Moremi Game Resrve (2 nights) (B, L, D)
Day 08: (THU) Moremi Game Reserve
This morning we’ll float in Mokoros through the
thick vegetation of the Okkavango Delta in the Moremi
Reserve discovering a variety of birds and wildlife
hoping to spot elephants, waterbuck or other animals
living in this water filled paradise. Unlike other
delta’s in the world, it flows into the
Kalahari Desert without reaching the coast,
which makes it
unique. You have the opportunity to listen
to the sounds of
the wilderness whilst sitting around the campfire
at night. (B, L, D)
Day 09: (FRI) Savuti Game Reserve
We leave the Moremi Reserve behind and enter the
bordering Savuti Game Reserve, which also borders
the famous
Chobe National Park. An exciting day game driving
through the park. Savuti is often described as
the best wildlife –viewing
area in Africa. It boasts one of the highest
concentrations of wildlife, where major species
of animals can be
seen including giraffe, elephant, zebra, impala,
roan, sable, wildebeest, kudu, buffalo, waterbuck,
warthog,
eland, etc. The bird life is diverse and photography
opportunities are abound. Savuti is known for
its many predators also, including lion, spotted
hyenas,
jackal,
bat-eared fox, wild dog and even cheetah.
Overnight: Savuti Game Reserve (1 night) (B, L, D)
Days 10 & 11: (SAT/SUN) Chobe National
Park
Two days are spent exploring the Chobe National Park
with its abundance of wildlife. One of the most famous
game reserves in the World, Chobe National Park is
home to large animal populations and over 450 bird
species.
Overnight: Chobe National Park (2 nights) (B, L, D)
Day 12: (MON) Chobe National Park and Kasane
After breakfast and a last game drive we bid farewell
to Chobe National Park and make our way to
Kasane and Toro, where we meet our driver and the
vehicle
that
we started the tour with. Once we’ve reached
the lodge we’ll set up a camp and enjoy the rest
of the afternoon on a sunset cruise on the Chobe River.
Here we watch elephants, hippos, lions, crocodiles
and a variety of birds and more without having to reach
for our binoculars – you’ll be close enough
for close–up photographs.
Overnight: Toro Lodge (1 night) (B, L, D)
Day 13: (TUE) Chobe National Park / Victoria Falls
(Zambia)
A mid morning departure takes you from Chobe to Livingstone
in Zambia by ferry crossing the mighty Zambezi. Afternoon
